I Can't Pretend I'm Not Lonely

Lyric in Search of a Tune.

I read a book,
dine alone,
put a plaintive record on,
watch the late show on tv,
only me to talk to me.
I can’t pretend I’m not lonely.

I walk alone
by the sea,
even gulls deserted me.
On my mind a memory,
all the songs you sang to me.
I can’t pretend I’m not lonely.

I take a trip,
only me,
spend a month in lethargy
only think of me and thee,
mostly thee and thee and thee.
I can’t pretend I’m not lonely.

I call your name
in my sleep,
I’m damn tired of counting sheep.
I’m in need of company.
I can’t pretend I’m not lonely.
I just pretend you’re lonely too.

Your verses share a universal and seemingly timeless theme in this life/world, Gene. I know many will relate to what you have shared here. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Regis

I love the song, Gene! My advice? Get a couple cats (spayed/neutered); they ignore you as well as anyone, but also give you hugs when you need 'em...give you the feeling of being needed...and purrrrr you to comforting sleep. Experience talking :o)

I think as we enter the autumn years learning to live with lonesome is one of the more challenging lessons we have to learn. With or without a tune Gene this is one splendid poem...a true keeper for me. Welcome back, Gene.

This is poignantly sincere Gene, whether an actual feeling or one that you have imagined, it is really moving.

it was either the longing
or the lonely (to be held...)

I am feeling this one, Gene, right there with ya, lol! I am not a big fan of summer, and it makes me real morose, and that makes me feel lonely. This really gets in the head of the poem as well as the heart of it. Blessings, Gene :) Michelle xx

Good one mean Gene, I think this lonely thing is a little overated though. I'm with my wife almost twenty four seven except work and I don't seem to appreciate, I try but sometimes I wish she would visit a relative for a few years, almost brings me to tears, I guess if something happened to her for good I'd miss her. It seems we're never really appreciative until someone close to us dies, then we really miss them and get lonely. cheerio

Gene this touch a deep cord. A dear man like you should never be lonely but to have written this I know you must have felt it sometime in life. So good to have you back.

It has a Hoagy Carmichael 'feel' to it, Gene, this lyric..I'm not taking it to represent your current state but rather the words of a sad song of longing, that ineffable longing we see in eyes and sometimes hear eloquently as we do here.

You won't believe how thrilled I am to have the opportunity to read you once again. You have been sooooo missed. The Lyrics that came flooding to my mind was "Only You." By The Platters I think. A sad set of verses which tug at my heart strings and you do it so very well. Love and admiration, J'nia

Gene, have you seen a Saguaro cactus anytime? With their arms up in despair? All alone?
That's the picture that your poem conveys, forget about her, nurse that sad loneliness and the tune will come with a crying guitar...

Ah, it's just a category poem of Romance of yesteryear, the gal at the black gloss piano bar with a tune lifting from her ivory fingers to your heart, Gene...reminiscence of a time when gulls were the way to a girl's heart and a tango with a bottle of scotch entangled in one another's arms watching Bogart's African Queen...you're back in good writing form, Gene...be well.

Sage

I hope this is the muse talking ... powerfully, powerfully emotive and so well written -- excellent, Gene.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

This is not the Gene I know. So I will presume it is the busy muse that dwells within his creative mind. I think this would be a great song for old blue eyes(Sinatra) to sing for us. I wish I knew how to write the music for it. Something along the order of "Strangers in The Night" is probably the right tempo. I like this rendering. It is not easy to imagine and verbalize a circumstance we would not wish to be forced to endure. This is the essential Gene I remember. Keep the good stuff coming our way my friend. May this day and all of your days be filled with joy and peace. Jon Michael

I love your song, Gene. One never can be sure whether a poem is autobiographical or simply another imaginative, wonderful piece. I am hoping for the latter in your case. But, if you are lonely, I'll meet you later in a day-dream. I'll bring a deck of cards (I play a mean hand of poker) or some Keats - maybe both. Then, we'll quiet ourselves and listen for the gulls; I trust they have not forsaken you.
