Why Do Some People Wear Masks

Mask

Why do we choose to wear masks?
Does it get to feel like second skin?
Is it for pretense or comfort?
Or hide the soul within?

Some people are so unaware
Of what shows to another's view
They gaze out of eye holes
And think the world sees them as True

A wardrobe of masks is collected
Throughout our many years
A feeling of being protected
As we privately guard our tears

Lately I have been thinking
About my wardrobe of masks
And how my collections increased
I must take myself now to task

It seems I have a smile
For three people on this whole earth
They touch my heart with honesty
My two children to which I gave birth

The third is my very best friend
Who loves me inspite of myself
Without this love and strength
My sanity would surely be shelved!

But I realize I've retreated
Behind the comfort of my masks
And so much of me I deleted
Surviving my lifetime of tasks

I know I'm still in there someplace
And sometimes I still talk to me
Its not like I could leave myself
Cuz I follow me, wherever I be!

Masks hide and protect us,
Yet hold so much at bay
We cheat ourselves, and reject trust
As opportunities go astray

This mask I wear has kept me
From feeling the sun on my skin
I've rejected opportunities many a time
To my mortification and chagrin

Now is the time to remove my masks
And leave them to the dust
These masks have kept me from feeling
LIFE'S KISS.....................
BY WHOSE PASSION, I KNOW I'LL COMBUST!!

Those masks are so very necessary at times. You write in "real time," Anita - to read your words (your thoughts) is a privilage.

Some wear them for survival..others to fool people into believing they are something they are not.. Trick is.. figuring out who is hiding for what reason.. I wear mine because it I took it off I would scare the hell out of everyone..lol Great write.

People feel safe behind those masks 'Anita'. And that's okay unless it becomes a wall instead of a mask. A mask can be taken off, when need be,,,but the wall has to be knocked down,,and more often than not,,it doesn't come so easily. Good write. Thanks so much for sharing this. Lisa

This is inspiring to me..
All of us have worn a mask or two,
a time or two....

good luck...it is so difficult to cast off the masks, as i'm sure you've experienced..but it must start with the willingness to do so as well as the recognition that it must be done if we are truly to be true to ourselves...thoughtful write, poet, thank you for droppin'!

"Why Do Some People Wear Masks" moves the shy forward to see her/his face on the mirror of life.

It is an excellent composition bearing the voice of wisdom, under the eyes of the wise. It is the filtered emotions of life depicted with words sung by a soul that synchronize wonders.

Thank You, Poet!

This is brilliant..BUT ANITA, I contend..Life is itself MASK WITHIN MANY MASKS..Images slither and change so often..EVEN symmetries change!
