Poem Artwork

What happened to my world
That moved at twice the speed of sound?
What became of all the parties,
And occasional sleeping around?

Where'd they take all of the alcohol,
That was part of most of what I did?
What happened to the monstrous ego,
That I'd nurtured since I was a kid?

What happened to all of the friends that I'd known,
Who said we'd be together till the end?
Why is my family spread so far apart,
And why is it so hard for us to make amends?

The youngsters all try to run me over,
On the freeway as I drive home from work.
In those damn BMWs, and the Lexus too,
Each one driven by a jerk.

I see them all,
With cellphones at the ear.
I would surely honk my horn,
But I know no one would hear.

They all speak a new language,
And it's one of their very own,
It's like, yo man, like wow,
Yo yo, hey, pick up the phone!

We take a long walk to the park,
Shortly after I get home,
My wife and my dog can hardly wait,
Cause we're working on our muscle tone.

The kids all race by,
In their mamma's car,
Oblivious to what's around them.
If they'd just take a moment to walk in the park,
I have no doubt it would astound them.

By nine o'clock we're in bed,
And useless to the Nielsons.
I'm afraid that's why you who stay up so late,
Are always stuck with the Simpsons.

It is for us a simple life,
As we drift through middle age.
We hold each other and we kiss goodnight,
And we're grateful for lazy days.

The younger folks all ask me,
Nearly every day,
If I miss my youth,
And all that went with it?
I answer no way,
But I don't expect you to get it.

A wonderful theme packed with outstanding images. I especially like,

"The kids all race by,
In their Mamma's car,
Oblivious to what's around them.
If they'd just take a moment to walk in the park,
I've no doubt that it would astound them."

Poetic truth.
