Poem Artwork

I heard your voice last night on the telephone,
It made me sad to hear you so alone.
The years go by,
And they don't ask permission,
They just add up the time,
In an unrelenting fashion.

I remember the days when you were younger,
And thoughts of you,
Created a parental hunger,
To have all of your attention,
And a large piece of your love,
You were my beautiful little angel,
Sent down from above.

It wasn't too long
Before your growth and maturity,
Had completely erased
My sense of security,
And I was no longer your focal point in this life.

I just have to trust,
In God's wisdom and plan,
For when it comes to teenagers,
There is little I understand,
And I just knew that something had changed..

You are a woman now,
Of that I am sure,
And you can take care of yourself;
You've made that clear.
But as you grow older,
And have children of your own,
I silently pray to myself,
That you'll come to know,
How precious to me you've always been.

And maybe once again,
We'll find our way,
Back to that special place,
Where I hope we'll stay,
And I'll see in your eyes,
Each and every day,
The love for your father,
On prominent display.

And then we can walk down the street,
Hand in hand,
And I can hug you in public,
And you'll understand.

This, I hope until the end of my days,
And more than hope,
I fervently pray,
That the worst of this is behind us.

Absolutely fabulous. Your rhyme does not interfere one iota with the message of this poem--only the best can do that. I was especially impressed with the second stanza--your mention of "hunger" and then your "a large piece of your love" separated by a line. I think you're very talented--look forward to reading more of your poetry.
