Only Time Will Tell

by Frank P Whyte — Read all 321 poems by Frank P Whyte

For my daughter, Lindsay, as she embarks on the odyssey of parenthood, which, by the way, I am sure she will be great at.

Poem Artwork

I watched you walking,
Baby in one arm,
Dragging a suitcase behind.
Just last night, we were quietly talking,
Now you’ve flown
All across the land.
You’re the picture of the Lady Madonna,
Baby is happiest at your breast.
Just let me home when the workday is done,
Let me home for to get some rest.

What will we do with you, young mamma?
You’re a banker’s nightmare,
And for your daddy it’s worse.
Whose gonna be the one to save you?
Who’ll put food on your table,
And money in your purse?

You’re flying low,
From deadline to disaster,
Write some checks, yeah,
But just in time.
Save some money for food and diapers,
The others depend upon you,
That’s the truth, girl
Or don’t you know?

The expression that you saw on your daddy’s face,
Should have been one,
That you know very well.
I know you’re lookin’ at that face in the mirror,
Come on, Daddy, can you stake me some more?

I know it’s late but please watch
the news with me;
Sad stories and the world is sadder still.
My life is better than the hordes of the poor,
So why can’t I make all the ends meet?

Little girl, I worry about you day and night,
And tell your sister that it’s true for her too,
And now there’s a baby
On everyone’s horizon,
The stakes are high, girl,
And the mercury rises every day.

I want some answers,
To everybody’s problems,
Some answers to my prayers is all that I ask.
I want to fix,
All the ills within my family,
But you’re so far away,
And today you traveled farther still.

My hair is gray,
And the lines in my face are deeper.
My nerves are frayed today,
More than they were yesterday.
When you’re a parent,
The term is for a lifetime,
I know you know,
And now you’re in it to stay.

And so, my dear, I pass the reins,
And authority,
Along with the charge,
That you do it well.
As for your success in this role life has given you,
You know, my child,
Only time will tell.

With regard to Paul McCartney; Stanza one, lines seven and eight.
