Mary in the Meadow

Poem Artwork

Blue-eyed Mary spent her summers
In the clover field, just outside of town;
She was barefoot in the sunshine,
And she was naked in the rain.

Mary never talked to children her own age,
But you could always hear her sing,
“Bring flowers to the princess,
And chocolate for the king.”

The giant sycamore casts shade on the meadow,
But it’s hollow at its core,
And that’s where Mary played and dreamed,
And she never asked for more.

She was as free as a butterfly,
And happy as a clam,
She never minded being all alone,
She said that’s just who I am.

Mary wanted children,
A band of them, if she had one,
She would lead them to the tree in the meadow,
And they would play until the day was done.

They would sing,
“Bring flowers to the princess,
And chocolate for the king,”
I’m the happiest mother to ever walk the earth,
“C’mon, children, let’s everybody sing.”

Bobby was walking lazily,
Through the clover one summer day.
He never minded being all alone,
He was a loner; that was just his way.

He heard a sweet voice singing,
But he wasn’t sure from where,
Until he looked upon the hollow tree,
And it was then that he began to stare.

Her name was Mary,
And he knew that she kept to herself,
He thought that she was the prettiest girl,
That he had ever seen himself.

It wasn’t long before they were the best of friends,
Mary and her new beau,
And together they dreamed of the family they’d have,
Ten kids and a beautiful log home.

And so it is in the meadow,
Where the clover grows tall and green,
That there is a beautiful new home,
And six of the cutest kids that you have ever seen.

And that family is as happy as you can imagine,
But for each other, they don’t need a thing,
And when the breeze is right in the morning,
You can sometimes hear them sing.
“Bring flowers for the princess,
And chocolate for the king,
We’re the happiest family in the whole human race,
C’mon, everybody, let’s sing.”
