One Year Gone

by Frank P Whyte — Read all 321 poems by Frank P Whyte

For my friend, Constance, on the one year anniversary of her mother's death.

Poem Artwork

Oh, Mother, I saw you,
At the dawn of yesterday’s morn,
And later, indeed, I felt you,
In this heart of mine so torn.
Ours was nothing extraordinary,
But it was precious beyond compare,
And today I’ll open those memories,
Which dance on the evening air.
You know,
I hope,
That I carry you with me,
 Each and every day,
But today you are closer than on most of them,
Oh, Mother, please won’t you stay?

It was a year ago on March 11 that I lost my son to brain cancer at 7 years old. Today (April 2), actually 2 hours from now, he would have been 9. I met you through a patient of yours, who passed a few months ago, and have enjoyed your writings ever since. Thank you.

Very nicely done--The first year can be such a tough one, and then the first anniversary of a loved one's death comes, bringing more intense memories. Grief is a strong emotion, not understood by people who have not experienced it. I think you've expressed the range of emotions and thoughts with great understanding.
My sympathy and prayer goes out to your friend on this 1-year anniversary.
