I was drunk, half asleep,
Thru the whole half-day,
Till livelong noon. . .
Hearing that the funfair
Soon be gone, I hurried
On my way downhill
To be on time in the place
They called “Red Hole.”
In a green bamboo grove
I came across an old monk
With whom I played draughts,
One set after another,
And with whom I chatted
So leisurely and so at ease
That one more half-day
Insensibly passed away,
Without leaving a shade
On my intoxicated soul.
