Death and life, preservation and ruin,
Blame and praise, cold and heat,
Failure and success, hunger and thirst,
Poverty and wealth, superiority
And inferiority—all these
Are the changes of environment
And unforeseen circumstances—
The operation of our appointed lot.
Day and night they succeed
To one another, alternating before us,
But there is no wisdom able to discover
To what they owe their origination.
They are not sufficient and therefore
Strive to disturb the harmony
Of the profound, and are not allowed
To enter into the treasury of awareness.
To cause this harmony and satisfaction
Ever to be diffused while the feeling
Of pleasure is not lost from the attitude.
To allow no break to arise in this state
Day and night, so that it is always springtime
In our relations with all external things
And their maturity, through which they die.
In our daily experience to realise from within,
We try to be appropriate to each season
And every point of the yearly circuit.
To cut it short, these are the innate traits
Of all those whose power of insight
Is always on and needs no time to be proved.
