I've found out that poetry
Is closely connected with fine art,
Being akin to it, if not to say
Essentially identical with it,
In spirit and technique.
To my mind, what's more,
Poetry has taken over
The function of religion,
In so far as the latter
Is taken to mean
A cleansing of man's soul,
A feeling for the mystery
And beauty of this world,
And feeling of tenderness
And compassion for one's sort
Of fellows and humble creatures
Of Heaven and Earth -- all in its power!
We all have found inspiration
And living emotion in poetry --
It teaches us a view of life which,
Thru the influence of proverbs
And idioms, has permeated into us
And given us a sense of compassion,
An overflowing love of Mother Nature,
And an attitude of artistic acceptance
Of this, at times, depraved and cruel life.
Through its feeling for nature it has often
Healed the wounds in the men's souls, and
Thru its lesson of enjoyment of the simple life
It keeps a sane ideal for the world's anti-barbarity.
I'm often wrong, but I thought that a eulogy was describing something after it died? Your poem describes a living entity that has somehow, through its power overcome religion as a source of a framework of belief. Perhaps you are true. Perhaps religion is dead and poetry is just… Carrying on.
Well said,but as a writer of humorous poetry, I would add laughter in there right next to beauty and everything else. Poetry has many layers of emotion.
The importance of poetry is not measured by what a poet says but by how he says it. Carl Sandburg's description of poetry is interesting: "Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance." I think one of the ways of feeling beautifully alive, in this life, is to read something beautiful.
