Religion cannot be,
And should not be,
Anything except
An inspiration and
A living emotion
We are endowed
From above by Heaven
And propped
From below by Earth.
Some have not found
Such an inspiration
Or living emotion
In any rites or ceremonies
Which to them are merely
Decorative patches
And frills covering
The seamy side of life.
Having largely to do
With incense, liturgy,
Sinfulness, sickness,
Death, and funerals,
It simply is a menial
Of filthy lucre, that's it.
What makes the peoples
Of the world trust in
If not hard cash? . .
You hit the nail on the head. Religious ritual is so ingrained that it seems to be required that everyone goes through a ritual with each passage in life. And, they get more expensive, like healthcare, every year with people going to outlandish expense just to cover one ritual or another. And, at the end of the food chain of gold is the church, collecting their due.
