123-45-6789 © - Tom Hyland - 2/14/12 The Number Above is Totally Fictitious! I Made It Up - OK? But - it Represents a Social Security Number - 9 Digits - in a 3-2-4 Arrangement. The First Three Digits Designate The State. A Large ‘Block’ of Numbers Was Set Aside Accordingly. Let’s Say MD is 200 to 250 - Just as an Example - OK? The Second Set of Two Numbers Designate an Area of the State. Let’s Say 36 Stands for Baltimore City. The ‘Final Four’ Are for The Individual. So - Let’s Say that in 1936 - My Dad Was Assigned 200-36-0001 - The Next Guy Could Be 200-36-0002 - When The Assigned Numbers Reached 200-36-9999 ... You Could Have Had 9,999 Individuals - Before Jumping to 201-36-XXXX - Get The Picture? Allowance for Growth & Advancement Was Pre-Planned! FDR & ‘The Gov’ Actually Did Something Smart! Now - 76 Years Later - It May be Up to 220-36-0001 ? Who Knows? Who Cares? The Point Is That a Nine-Digit SSA Number Was Established - And IT Still Works! OK? Way Back in 1956 - When I turned 16 - I Got My First Social Security ID Card. I Still have The Same Original Stowed Right In My Wallet! Any Time a Person Ever LOSES His/Her Card - A Copy of the SAME NUMBER is Issued! You Have Been IDENTIFIED For LIFE! All Your EARNINGS Records Are Stored THERE! In the Fall of 1958 - Right from High School - My very First Full-Time JOB - Was At The Social Security Administration On Candler Street, at Market Place, Downtown ‘BAWLMER’! By 1960 or 1961 - I Had Worked at Three Different Locations - That’s When The Entire ‘Shebang’ was Moved - To a Central Location in Woodlawn, Maryland. The National Headquarters for SSA. Don’t Remember the Month, But ... That’s When MEDICARE Was Being Planned. And This ‘New’ Agency Wanted to Use The Same SS# for Identification! OOPS! Hold On There - ‘Partner’ ... The SSA Said: - NO WAY JOSE! They SUED Medicare - and Tried to Block It! The Courts Said: - “Sorry, Charlie” !!! SO - The ‘Law of The Land’ - Allowed the USE of The SS# For MEDICARE Also! Seemed to Make Sense At the Time, Right? NOTA BENE: THIS FACT IS THE ONLY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO AGENCIES! Social Security Benefits Have Always Been Derived From Your EARNINGS Through Shared Pay-Roll Taxes From Individuals and Employers! NOTA BENE: NOT ONE SINGLE CENT OF BENEFITS HAVE EVER COME FROM THE UNITED STATES TREASURY BUDGET! NOT ONE! Understand This: The Social Security Administration Itself - With All ITS Costs Was Once Under The Department of Education, Health, and Welfare! Lord Knows What IT is Called Now! ‘THEY’ - Meaning Good Ole CONGRESS - STUCK MEDICARE RIGHT UNDER SSA! Wrong! Bad! No-No! STUPID! Here Lies ‘The RUB’! ONE Has Absolutely Nothing To Do With The OTHER! Some 45-50 Years Later - When ‘THEY’ Realize What a ‘BOON-DOGGLE’ MEDICARE Has Become ... ‘THEY’ Want to GRAB SOCIAL SECURITY FUNDS! At The Risk of Repeating Myself ... ‘NO WAY JOSE!’ Now, Let Us Consider Another Major Fact - You Know How Everywhere, Everyone - WARNS YOU - ‘Don’t Give Out Your SS# ! Especially ... ONLINE! Most Poor Ole ‘GEEZERS’ Like Me - Who Are Now ON MEDICARE - ARE FORCED TO GIVE OUT YOUR MEDICARE CARD FOR EACH & EVERY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER! DUH? Any ‘Hacker’ With Any Sense Whatsoever Can Obtain One’s MEDICARE Number - DROP The A or B Suffix ... And Voila! Your ‘Confidential’ SSN Is Known! Let Me now Purposely Repeat Myself: DUH! DUH! DUH! DUH! DUH! DUH! So Now - Knowing this Fact ... Most, If Not All - Banks, Credit Unions, Utilities, Et Cetera - Make You Set Up ‘Secret’ Questions - And ‘Secret’ Answers - Along With - Your SSN! ‘Copy What’s In This Box’ { ry5w2~* } - (usually illegible) Is Yet Another ‘Ploy’ to IDENTIFY Yourself! The state of NJ accepts the SS card for ID for a new drivers license when the old one runs out, though they also ask for like a hundred other forms of ID too...I dread going to the MV place just for the reason that if u don't bring the right ID they send u back home to find it...mine is up in June of this year...as always a good write & some of us read EVERYTHING u write, not just poetry...Jurseeeeeeeeeeey
