Earth's Plenteousness - Eden's Edge Effect - ED's Version

Twelve years ago, I wrote this poem. My dear friend, Ed Reese, often critiqued my "brain-children." He tried through the years to teach me to be more of a Wordsmith, rather than a "Rhymester."

So, for your edification, I have presented here, four "pieces." My original "Earth's Plenteousness" (to Ed, a Verbosity), ED's Version (Haiku), "Eden's Edge Effect" my Tanka version, and finally "To Ed" my Eulogy for a true Wordsmith.

If one realizes that all three poems are the same, with the same theme, yet totally different - is any one of them "right" or "wrong"? No, each author presents each piece to the world, as he or she FEELS it at the time of creation. You be the Judge, OK?

Earth's Plenteousness

Espy the sky:

a whirling, sparkling, puissant, eternal, exquisite,

celestial blue and white jewel.

Could you doubt - God did make it so?

Behold the land:

a gyrating, lustrous, vigorous, lasting, luscious,

globular green pap.

Could one doubt - God did make it so?

See the sea:

a rolling, glistening, powerful, boundless, beauteous,

aquatic blue and green tear.

Could any doubt - God did make it so?

Mind the man:

a frolicking, faint, frail, finite, feral,

mortal prosaic fledgling.

Doubt not I - God did make it so!

Ed’s Version

THE SKY ETERNAL,

THE LAND ABUNDANT,

THE SEA ABOUNDING,

MAN - CAPRICIOUS,

GOD LAUGHS.

Haiku Version - ( 5-5-5-2 )

Posted Posthumously, by your Friend, Tom

Eden's Edge Effect ?

Endless sky, vast land,

rife sea, flora and fauna,

both beauty and beasts,

magnificence abounds, yet ---

God laughs at: capricious man.

August 5, 1993: T.K.H.'s Tanka version of

E.R.'s April 11, 1991 Haiku version of

T.K.H.'S April 10, 1991 original verbosity,

entitled "Earth's Plenteousness".

To Ed

This afternoon, good news was received that

another had favorably survived brain surgery;

but a few short hours later, I heard the bad news

that I had lost a friend, and this was a shock to me.

For two months I had prayed for the former;

but the answer came not quick,

for the latter, there had been no pleas,

for I knew not, that you had even been sick.

Just who was this Welshman, who swaggered so proud,

a Change-Ringer, Choirman, who sang deep bass notes, not loud?

Ed was a musician, many years ago, and performed

with a group, whose name I do not know.

A fellow smoker, who would tip his hat to you,

and quick as a wink, smile, bid you a toast,

then --- down his drink!

He worked many a year as a programmer,

making places of business secure,

traveled to foreign lands, designing access systems,

alarms, and more.

Writer, Author, Wordsmith, and even Mentor,

he critiqued my poems, which were always verbose,

saying, "Tommy, my lad, say more with less,

trust me, a Tanka could never be worse."

I'm told by others, he was not prone to speak out;

but to me, he spoke freely, things his agile mind was about.

For six years I've known you, and many a "tune" we've crooned,

we shall always remember you, when e'er we sing,

"O Sacrum Convivium."

Ed, as you go before us, to prepare a place, know this,

to your friends at The Cathedral, you'll surely be sorely missed.

All about the history of Change Ringing,

t'was you who explained to me,

"Ask not for whom the bell tolls

for, (my friend) it now tolls for thee."

I bid you adieu, mon ami, Ed Reese,

and wish you the words in the anthem, "Deep Peace."

For: Ed, his wife Marge, and his son, Guy.
