Nine months of freedom
In the north woods of New Hampshire;
Now the old wolf waits
For his friend to come for his morning visit.
When Fred arrived he sat down and the old one
Put his head in his lap.
As Fred caressed the old head
He fell asleep to wake no more,
Perhaps one day Fred’s eyes will meet
The gaze of a young wolf pup
And know that the freed spirit
Has returned.

The Return of The Free Spirit
All was going well at the wolf dog refuge
That bright spring day.
The dogs were all frolicking about or
Lying in their favorite sun spot,
Thankful that another winter
Had passed and they had survived
Suddenly the sound of an old
Pick up truck bouncing down
The road to the compound
Broke the quiet.
It pulled up in front of the lodge and
A man got out holding a small
Ball of fur in his arms
Fred came out to meet
Him …
This is the pup I called you about…
His mother was hit by a car.
I knew you would know
what to do to care for him.
The man left the pup there
And for the rest of the afternoon
He followed Fred around
Wherever he went, meeting
Some of the other wolf dog
Residents of the compound.
When the day was over,
The rest of the dogs settled for the night,
Fred sat down on the edge of the porch.
The young pup came up beside him
And laid his head in his lap
And looked up at the old man
With a familiar look in his eye
And Fred knew….
The freed spirit had returned.
