Gram always knew
Her birthday dinner
Would be a native
Brook trout.
It was a gift
Of love from
A fisherman to
His Mother-in-law,
Often so fresh
It was still wiggling
When he laid it in her sink.
If you asked him how he did it
Every 3rd of May
He would tell you
In that old Yankee accent
“Ya just gotta hold ya
mouth right.”
