This poem wrenched itself from my consciousness last night. People are careful about what they let children watch and read, but in the heat of a family argument they are not as picky about what their children hear...
It is so true that words can have a devastating impact on one's self-esteem, Chip. Believe me, I know. I once compared words to shrapnel in a poem. By the way, my parents were from France. there are deep-rooted problems with parents who continue arguing about the (pre)cessation of their child's birth ... why would a mother want her child to hear this? seems like the classical dysfunctional family and perhaps a mother who was in fact the one not wanting her child's birth ... did your father mention the abortion once just as he found out? who knows?
This is so powerful! It stays with you for a lifetime. Words carry their force in punitive damages and in this case, from the bloody womb...this is really a truth very rare coming from a male viewpoint, Chip...be well.
Man Chip, that's a heavy load to carry. You have to know that she was angry and upset and that it was your father that she was lashing out at, not you. For whatever reason, she resisted his urging to abort. Cling to that. Dwell on the good times and try to file those times of argument on a high shelf where they will be harder to reach. Based upon your writings, you are obviously a strong person and deep down, you know that she loved you. Stay strong. Dick
