THE AMAZIN’ AMAZON          

Awash in a river of books I let its current take me wherever it will go.

Books for fun and profit, say I, maybe even a surprise or two. I don’t know,

Why should I try and control the flow? It’s so much fun. Folks await

Along the banking, asking if I can pull a tome out of the raging torrent,

Just the one needful volume. Can I find it, and fling it to them? Please???

One wants to know how to best use his money, and another seeks

A closer walk with the Almighty. Someone wants to explore lands far away,

Never needing to actually go- A La-Z-Boy expedition. Can I arrange that?

Why SOITAINLY, but I always try to serve it up with a dollop of humor,

A horrible pun or two, maybe an ageless anecdote. Any will serve.

Another wants to meet a Harlequin. “Kiss me, you fool.” Oh my!!!

“No thanks, sorry, I’m taken.” Psychiatrists, psychos, conjurers and cads;

A politician or two- “Let me make it perfectly clear-my book says so,

So it must be.” Did I say a lot of fools get published? Well you know,

These days anyone can write a book, even dreamers and poets like me.

Standing around a pitcher of martinis. Who do you suppose would make

The most sense? W.C Fields, of course, or Ogden Nash. Danielle Steele and Julia

Child have tied Dr. Laura Schlesinger to a stake, while a bunch of lesbian

Cowgirls hunt for fuel, and Agatha Christie waits impatiently with a match.

So goes my dream, my nightmare, as I cruise down the amazin’ Amazon,

My raft a keyboard and computer. Want a book? I got it. Over 1600 varieties

Well done, occasionally rare, sometimes spicy, frequently salty, never bland,

(Unless you buy that book of logarithmic tables). T.S. Eliot loves me, I amaze

Mark Twain. There’s no end to what or who you’ll find, floating in the river.
