To Elizabeth

A friend's daughter had her 16th birthday yesterday. I stuffed this in the birthday card.

TO ELIZABETH

Tall, lithe, fair, and graceful,
Braided hair and prairie dresses,
Fifteen going on sixteen,
Caught in the moment
Between girl and young woman
Like a butterfly
Emerging from her cocoon.
And her smile, enigmatic,
A Mona Lisa smile,
Hints of secrets
She shares only with God.
