WHEN-IF
When you return,
I shall be as the prodigal’s father,
Ever watching and hoping.
I shall run to you
As fast as my legs will carry me,
I shall hug you
To within an inch of your life,
I shall cover you with kisses,
And for you a new robe and ring.
The fatted calf shall be killed,
A feast prepared,
And woe be to your big brother
Or anyone else
Who questions my joy
Or takes my sense of relief lightly.
I shall intentionally
Resist the urge
To ask why,
To ask what kept you,
Or to scold you
For your wandering.
Should you decide
Not to return,
That the house and situation
You have found
Are better than
The house and situation you left,
I shall honor that decision
Sadly.
I shall regret the waste
Of the inheritance,
But I shall never stop
Looking out my window,
Waiting, hoping,
For your return.
