Circus Elephants

This is a true story of what took place one day in Whitby Station Square, I can't remember the year, probably late 60's, early 70's. The white cotton lace dress I was wearing that day did not stay white for long!!

Circus Elephants

The circus came to town one day
and pulled up in Station Square.
They opened up one great big truck
as a curious crowd gathered there.
A strong and unpleasant smell emerged
quickly followed by three camels,
then came four young elephants
waving their periscope trunks in the air.

Sniffing at the air and milling round awhile
they detect a new and different scent,
so taking off in single file
to find the source, they are now intent.
The leader emits a trumpet that’s shattering
as they move rapidly across the square
and the crowd is quickly scattering
before these elephants, in such a great hurry.

The keeper yells and shouts but finds
that his charges pay no attention.
They have set their hearts and minds
on finding this new scent-sation.
I watched them coming and stood my ground
as they headed straight towards me,
in a diagonal line across that square,
to my lone figure, yes they found me
.

My heart is thumping and I’m filled with awe.
as the elephants stop before me,
and with the tip of their long extended trunks,
and a delicately soft and gentle touch
start to explore my face and body.
And I could hear a sound as they circled me,
a soft rumbling, just like a deep throated purr
emanating from deep within their belly.

They caressed and gently blew my hair
and allowed me to fondle their trunks,
while from a safe distance, over there,
the crowd watched in total amazement
this strange and affectionate display.
Then the irate keeper came
to round up his charges and take them away.
And the magic moments were broken.

I don’t know why they chose me that day,
maybe they read my mind
and sensed the admiration and love
that I have always felt for their kind.

Jackie how wondrous! I can imagine the thrill you felt. I had an elephant in a zoo follow me after I had ridden it. Quite an experience, they had a hard time getting it to leave me. It was something I'll never forget.

Jackie this was really a special moment - to be chosen by the magestic troup of elephants as the object of their affection! I too love the beautiful beasts....something extremely special about the gentleness of something so large. This was a great write!

Then again maybe you are a reincarnated love toy of their great uncle elephant. Funny write, even funnier because of the truth detector.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
