The hand extends
reflexively, palm outward,
before moving to cover
the now open mouth.
The body coils like a spring.
The eyes widen,
and look on helplessly
as the inevitable
acts itself out against
desperate hope.
Afterward, unanswered questions
flood the mind forever.
