Final Traits (introducing a new poet!)

Several years ago, when I still wrote exclusively in Portuguese, I was very fond of creating literary characters. Some of them had long and very eventful lives, which I would narrate in series of stories set in different parts of the world and in different times, while others would appear and disappear, according to the relevance of their role as the particular plots evolved. Then, my own writing urges and priorities evolved and changed. I began to write poetry regularly, first, and also exclusively, in Portuguese, and then in English, language in which I also began to try my hand at prose. All my “old” characters were, therefore, sort of “left in the drawer”, as were their stories, for a while, and it wasn’t till very recently that I again felt the itch to revive them, or to create new ones. Spontaneously, a first new character – this time, a poet! – began to take substance. Her name was Paula Paixão Botelho, she was Portuguese but living in the region of Galicia (northwestern Spain), and she wrote poems, sometimes under her real name, sometimes under the pen-name of “pedramares”, both in the Portuguese language (very close to the Galician) and in Castilian (more popularly known as Spanish). Today, I’m happy to share one of “her” poems with you. I’m posting the original in Castilian after the translation. In advance, “Paula” and I thank you for any feedback you may wish to offer.

Love,
Alexandra* / Paula Paixão Botelho “pedramares”

Final Traits

I wrote a finale
a while ago
a finale of traits
like those of a leaf.

But first
I aged them
like autumn lines
with hues of leaf, still
but more and more
with those hues of straw
taken by veins
that gradually dry
and dry
until, bled of all the sap
their profile would have fallen
crackling
under other lines -
the wintry
careless lines
of the steps of those
who walk over dead leaves
- if it were not for the finale
I wrote.

A finale which
a while ago
I planted among the pages of a book
unbound:

So that, in summery lines
some other poet may read it
and perceive, in those lines
with hues of leaf
the hues of a juicy fruit
in a ripening profile…

… or so that a child may come
who, of the traits, will gather the finale
between her hands of beginning
and, in lines of spring
will hang it, alive again
on a tree.

Rasgos finales

Escribí hace poco
un final, el final
de unos rasgos
como una hoja.

Pero antes
fui envejeciéndolos
en líneas otoñales,
con olor de hoja, aún,
pero cada vez más
con ese color pajizo
de venas que se secan
y resecan
hasta que, sangrado
de toda la savia
se tumbaría el perfil,
crujiente,
bajo otras líneas -
las líneas invernales,
displicentes, de los pasos
de los que pisan
hojas muertas -
si no fuera
el final
que escribí.

Un final que, hace poco,
implanté
entre las páginas de un libro
libre:

Para que, en líneas veraniegas,
pueda leerlo otro poeta
y vislumbre en esos rasgos
con olor de hoja
un color de fruta
en un perfil que madura…

… o venga un niño
que, de los rasgos,
coja el final
entre sus manos de principio,
y en líneas primaverales,
(hoja, sin más)
lo cuelgue, vivo,
de un árbol.

Alexandra,

I'm glad that you opened the drawer to this most inspiring poet. She has written a spectacular finale, with a full orchestra and dancers who move, elegantly, beneath the colourful lights of imagination. The audience demands an encore and they will not leave the theatre.

Beijinhos,
Joseph*
