THE SECRET LIFE OF STONES

Believe me: The stones can hear the wind
the whole air ploughing up words in
the leaves, the waves, and in the silences
of those lips that touch unknowingly.

And believe me: The stones are all
that remains when all that was born
is no more – the very words that the lips
birthed of love never made, but which
in the soul and in the silence, gradually
became tree, flesh, and ocean.

Yes, believe me; and never walk by a stone
without feeling it, without reading it:

It may seem deaf to you, inert, and yet…
believe me: It is but the perpetuity
in the silence, of all the air took away
as, on the lips, the words ceased touching
– loves and aches, fruits and jealousies, salt, passion
and names – and someone (a poet, or just a dreamer
alive or mad) wrote…

ORIGINAL VERSION (BILINGUAL/ CASTILIAN – PORTUGUESE)

A VIDA SECRETA DAS PEDRAS

crê-me: não é senão a perpetuidade, no silêncio,
de tudo o que o ar, ao deixarem de tocar-se
nas bocas as palavras – amores, dores,
frutos, ciúmes, sal, paixão e nomes – levou,
e alguém (poeta, ou apenas sonhadora,
ou viva, ou louca) escreveu…

Xuxa,

This poem speaks so much like Native American Wisdom and other ancient wisdom that it urges the reader to do something new and different, to look beyond the visible in order to experience all of Creation surrounding us as if it were the first time. I'm certain that Paula has some druidic or gypsy blood flowing through her veins that pours out here as ink on the page. You must have known that I would absolutely love this poem as you've observed me touching the stones and the trees, feeling their unique vibrations. So glad you translated and presented this work here.

So inspired by you and your amazing talent,
Teu Joseph*

STones are such a mystery and you pay tribute to them well here Onelight/Paula~ I liked this and I love stones, I am very specific what I have in my gardens for stones, they have to speak to me! I love cobble Walkwys, and they have character and alot to share,
I would venture to say!

Wonderful and yet a mystical write...made me think about an old cobble stone path that I once walked that led to an old victorian home...if those stones could speak what stories they would tell. It is kind of ironic too, I know a lady who used to paint faces on stones..I asked her how she chose the stones, she said she could see the character in the stone before she even began to paint!
Blessings,

Wow...this took my breath away. It is very original and in a way true. If stones could talk what would they tell us? Excellent poem. Victor
