Please welcome Ana Maria, a dear friend and Portuguese fellow author whom I’m honoured to introduce to you all. There is no better way to introduce a writer than through one of his/her writings – and, in this short text of poetic prose I selected, there is, if not all, much of the brilliant, vivid blend of the candid child and of the passionate woman present in the creations that, both in essence and in substance, reveal, more perfectly than any biography could, the author herself – such as Ana is, all heart, all body, all soul. Holding none of the words which convey it all, which convey her – whole.

THE WORDS I DIDN’T HOLD

what to do, when the words ride across the mountains of one’s cheeks, until they stop by the cleft of one’s chin? should I let them loose, or should I hold them?

it’s the love I feel in my heart that orders me to free them, and I obey.

I never told you, but I have also ridden – the sun and the moon! it wasn’t too long ago, and I still remember how I jumped at a trot, upon the sun’s back. contrary to what it may seem, it wasn’t too hot, but, rather, very pleasant and lenient.

in the sun, what impressed me the most was the fact that there was no head, no neck to hold on to, and so, I embraced the fire in its heart – and thus we journeyed across half of the earth. the same happened with the moon, with whom I travelled across the other half of the earth.

day or night, I don’t need wings in order to fly, or to know in order to love. the sun was born, the moon was born, and so was I.

did you know that I have once pierced the sun and the moon? I did it, with a pen. and, what came out, I caught it upon a piece of paper. the one I offer you, now. with the words I didn’t hold.

Dear Ana Maria,

I, for one, am glad that you do not hold such words. Your poetry shines with the beauty that comes from your heart.

Love & Light always and in all ways,

My goodness, this leaves me breathless! I don't know what it is about poetry in translation, but somehow I ALWAYS find the combination enriching, the synthesis of writers' minds, somehow. And the original must be AWESOME. What fabulous concept and imagery. Please offer our most sincere appreciation and my admiration. This strikes me as very Mediterranean somehow... can't quite put my finger on it. Very El Levante cum Paulo Coelho... More please! TY Kate xx :))
