Beyond bread alone
Each dawn we sieve ripened grains of yesterday
harvested and finely ground with dreams sown
and amorously tended to propitious growth, over
hopes freshly mounded by awakening eagerness
of touching fingertips, and into a concavity of anticipation
- open in this virginity of hunger for life that returns
like a daily batch to be baked.
You taste of transparent water and of the salt
with which you convert me and blend us
in my lips, kneaded with each kiss, with each
whisper, leavened with each warm breath.
And we raise, to pliable, fertile wholeness, with
love and merged inspirations like blessings in cross
over pure linen covering fragrant dough.
Then, this splendid abundance breaks, like a crispy
crust, as golden as first light, to reveal its core
of miracle still smoldering.
One to be lavishly served and shared, so that
it may sate – because it can - far more than
you and me, far more than five thousand
multiplied by the infinite – today, beyond
bread alone.

Bread is one of those universal staples and the recipe for its making handed from one generation to another. Bread should be blessed just as it blesses us. The smell and taste of fresh-baked bread is truly "heavenly". This poem is both spiritual and sensual at the same time. You are a master at writing poetry that deeply explores and expresses those "simple" things that bring so much joy to life.

A truly captivating piece, Alexandra!
When it is presented in such a manner, "its core still smoldering" love and bread, bread and love coming from passion's oven.
One Sweet Bread please?
