These things there are when you are not looking

Perhaps you are looking for happiness
tiring your eyes in its elusiveness
letting your arms be pillars of a temple
that crumbles before pleas much too high;

Perhaps you are always where you are not
counting the time for time yet to be
saving today for tomorrow
starving in present abundance while
feeding thoughts of future scarcity;

Perhaps Easter is just an egg to hatch
one more Christmas by Thanksgiving
and leftovers are to be served cold by New Year
with morsels of next summer, fried green;

Perhaps love follows the recipe they all swear by
and never fails to taste exactly as deceptively
as they say it is supposed to, anyway;

Perhaps… perhaps you are not looking
at all these things there are while you look
far too intently for too long much too far:

And yet, there are acutely happy moments
in days of chronic unhappiness;

And tiny, aeriform gestures of kindness
billowing up from a ground bearing
the stench of decomposing spite –

Yes, of breath naturally rising and hands
naturally lifting and eyes naturally falling
like reflections into cores willing to unravel
and naturally fly;

Because there are wings that would rather flutter
and be as brief as the memory light retains of a moth
than be the forever possible imperial butterfly
forever impending in the cocoon.

And there are clumps of three and four-leaved clover
along the path, being simply and equally green
for feet bare of all but keenness to experience
how good they naturally feel –

And feet that, along the same path, learn with the seasons
that other leaves would never delightfully rustle if green
were never to turn yellow and naturally crisp.

And there are dreams being dreamed and lives
being lived and poems being written and poets
in love and love being made like a dream life
writes in poetic prose about happiness –

That thing there is in all these things there are
when you are not looking.

Perhaps we should be looking there
Beyond the gaze, beyond the stare
For dreams which are so rich and rare
They fly beyond the point we dare.

We find what we seek yet there are some pleasant surprises along the way, which we may not have expected.

Your poetry opens doors.

Amo te muito,
Joseph

I would much rather be the leaf that never wilts or falls or dries or crumbles or crunches when I am stepped on. I know that life goes on behind my back...whether I am looking or my eyes are closed just as I know...everything is as it should be. Excellent write...love where your mind is on this wondrous piece of work.
Be well

This poem is oozing throgh the crevasses created by sadness in the soul, telling about tender things that happen when we aren't looking.
The delicate hand from Lusitania move words on paper like an Imperial butterfly does its wings over a secret garden.

Interesting thoughts and ideas that make the reader just want to sit back and contemplate the things we seldom get a chance to. Very nice.

You hold the tensions and counter-tensions well in this piece, Alexandra. The whole of life is sustained and balanced this way and even our own bodies cannot know health without these laws at work within its function. It's not solely understanding that adds life to our days, but awareness and appreciation that infuses us with joy - even amidst the pain or sorrow. In such ways are birth and death intermingled, always giving way to the new. To look means to take notice and pay heed. In too many ways are we passive. Love the perfumed walkways you take us along in this garden of reflective thought. TY Kate xx

Again you write of much substance for thought and reflection, Alexandra. Thank you for sharing your philosophical perspective. Much appreciated. Love and blessings to you,

Very well done Alexandra, I felt your intensity as you wrote this. Such a simplistic concept, but done in such a poetic manner as to capture this reader's heart and attention. Beautiful as always.

Amazingly on target is this one . . . Why am I surprised . . . You tend to zero in on the obvious, but write about it in the non-obvious way. I read this with a mixture of sadness and euphoria . . . Our goals to achieve happiness has been warped along the way to the twenty-first century . . . What passes for happiness in this century usually has to do with what we can "see," the pretty things we can acquire, but which most of us never quite "get." Pretty things. Pretty toys in the guise of what's new on the block. Pretty lovers, never mind the warped ego and vanity these loves bring to us . . . Pretty, pretty, pretty . . . Sorry, Alexandra, for getting carried away, and I did, I'm afraid . . . Somewhere, at sometime, as mankind, womankind, diversitykind has evolved, our brains have rotten . . . I put myself in all the categories I have mentioned . . . I'm not pointing fingers, I am stating fact . . . And THAT is why I look forward to your poetry and observations so dearly, it seems you are among the very few who really understand life's reason.
