The University Now
A great place it is said to have been once, the Oxford of the East.
Now it is a heritage building where lovers meet, in the ruins.
It was once a centre for teaching; but now like other mushrooming growths,
Has cut itself out as an ADVANCED CENTRE FOR LEARNING, with special grants
That reach special pockets to feed corruption and carnal lusts. Seats are reserved
Not on merit or for the really serious, but for the political or for those
That have been pushed there to increase caste potential, forced into scholarship
That is half-heartedly swallowed like bitter pills. Half boiled students taking in
Half-baked knowledge; fed by half-groomed teachers that crave to be dons,
To camouflage their community of morons, treating their studies like slip-ons.
Where the Vice-chancellors are too busy pleasing governments;
No time for students or teachers. Where living in anonymity is a virtue.
Students scarcely encouraged into theatre or the arts. The university has become
A storehouse of modern equipment, lying unused and abused. A haven for
The contractor building tall ugly walls to hide what goes on there and to
Send the funds into where they ought to go. A place that does little more than
Conducting exams and implementing the Semester-System – that last nail in
The coffin which ensures that exams will be more necessary than teaching and
Pretense will reign supreme; work replaced by inaction; reality replaced by dream.
I would like to remind Jerry that the ideology that he follows replaces scientific and critical analysis with faith and belief, something that is innately alien to higher learning. True higher learning, difficult when so much money for scholarship is earmarked by the provider with certain agendas, is apolitical and therefore, cannot be called either liberal or conservative. Conservatives often hate facts like you are clearly stating about the university you are writing about, because they go against their beliefs.
