The wonderful variety in India

 India

There are countries without character, there are countries with soul.

There are heavens on earth; there are hells in this world.

But India, my India, has all in its fold; it has every shooter it has every goal.

We have here God’s plenty, the Tri-colour unfurled.

Those that come to this country are of a certain kind.

They are healthy in body their minds awakened.

They are in search of meaning and are to this not blind

That the body is nothing if the mind’s unshakened.

Folks often do not come here without a survival kit.

They are warned of the dangers that await them here.

But they do come here and return thence feeling really fit.

With bodies refreshed and minds thinking clear.

India has a vast soul, accommodating everyone.

It looks not at the body, never focuses on the skin.

It welcomes, it satisfies, it feeds and provides fun

To those that arrive here of any race or kin.

With all its faults, imperfections, it has something strange.

It takes you to the spirit, the mystery of being.

It has tolerance aplenty, stuns with its breathtaking range.

Of course it has features like tourism and sightseeing.

The visitor to India, whoever it might be.

Returns with something added to his experience.

Either the taste of foods here or some other mystery

Opening up a third eye that makes all the difference.

When I traveled to Pakistan and Bangladesh after befriending many fellow students from India and other countries in the vicinity like Sri Lanka, I did not travel with a survival kit for I was simply interested in the culture… The many cultures of the region. I stayed with families and toured with them, not with a regimented tour group, but with the people on the land in their way of traveling and eating marvelous strange new foods.

I came away stronger with a better understanding of the world I live in and the people who live in it. Everyone should have such experiences. Unfortunately, so many have a stereotyped view that they carry with them and only travel in tour groups designed to isolate them from the people and the reality of the places they visit.

I can thank my Indian friends and long talks with my roommate, Behram Randelia for helping me open that eye.
