A few years back I did a bit of online dating, just to guage the experience you understand. I met all sorts (I could count the numpties on both hands within the first week) - the desperate, the lonely, the newly-divorced, those looking for casual...well, you know what I mean (mostly cheeky extremely young men looking for middle-aged women), the just-plain-mad types, and a few nice ones to converse with and meet once or twice for a coffee and a chat.

I wrote this little poem thingy about one of these encounters (one of the most positive ones as you will see).

One day I sat and had a think

With a cigarette and a long cold drink

I’d like to meet a friend on line

A friend with whom to pass the time

I did a search and found a site

For free (because of being tight)

And registered to meet some men

And waited for responses then

 

Well, boys of every kind wrote in

Wanting fun (or was it sin?)

I wasn't impressed because I knew

I wanted a friend who would be true

 

Then along comes Dan all full of hope

No flannel or any slick soft soap

He sounded real and when I text’d

I wondered what would come back next

 

He made me laugh, he made me think

He loved my words, and emoticon ‘wink’

He wanted more, he made it clear,

I wanted friendship, but oh my dear

 

Before I knew it, I got sucked in

And started wanting the same as him

Thinking, sod the friendship, this could be

The exact right kind of man for me

 

He seemed quite charming, so sincere

He made me feel full of good cheer

And though he wooed me at full strength

I vowed to keep him at arms length 

 

So now, we’ve got it right down pat

We like each other, we both know that

We’re moving at a slower pace

I want the next installment already. Since you have this encounter a few years back, it makes me wonder what became of this fledgling relationship. But from the poem, it certainly started out on the right foot.
