My Dad is in his late eighties. He's a doddery old soul now who likes to think he's independent when he's clearly not, but I do my best with him, and of course I love him to bits even when he gets on my last nerves. I cherish him and I'm blessed to still have him. He's still got his cheeky grin and the twinkle in his eyes that he's always had. This is a man who carried me on his shoulders and held me high up as he ran down the beach on our seaside holidays when I was young. I'm 60 now. For the most part we want our parents to live forever. But, boy, have the years taken their toll, and the words to this rhyme came to me, not to be disrespectful to the old boy but just my own private observations which are heartbreaking to a certain degree and a real shame. But I can still picture the man he was, which is why it's a bit of a shock to me that he's so frail and helpless because it's not so much the age he is but the way in which his health has declined. Yet he insists he doesn't need anyone 'fussing' over him.

Note: For those who read my first draft and left such kind reviews, for which I thank you very much, I have modified this poem slightly - I hope you don't mind - and now it sounds complete and I'm happier with it.

A new portrait of My Old Dad

I’ve seen some things I’ve never seen before concerning my old Dad,

Things I didn’t notice more until his health got really bad

Things which weren’t apparent, till I helped him with his kegs,

sagging skin hanging loosely on extremely skinny legs

His feet could do with a pumice scrub; the nails are gnarled and thick

It’s not hard to sum it up why he hobbles with his walking stick

He now can’t shave to improve his image, an accident’s one of his constant fears

He's frightened of a fatal slippage, hairs up his nose match those in his ears

And I know he used to pride himself on how meticulously he used to dress

Now he doesn’t care if a bit of wee runs down his pants and makes a mess

While he’s still got some mettle, it’s still a blessing that’s for sure

But he’s stubborn now and forgetful, and getting befuddled more and more

If he doesn’t answer his phone I then, keep trying with anxious urgency

he’s practically as deaf as a stone; it's when, he could've suffered some emergency

Reaching this ill-health stage, I can’t blame his disposition

He’s made it to a ripe old age as though this old boy's on a mission

to live long and prosper, so the saying goes, though preferably, one hopes, in one piece

But various ailments do oppose the quality of this, life’s temporary lease

You see this man cut down, once fit and strong, when life’s clock has ebbed away his youth

And he doesn’t look like he has very long, and that's the ugly agonising truth

And equally sad I see the slow but steady, and unforgiving cruel decline

With one foot in the grave already, by Mother Nature’s flawed design

(Mind you, he’s still got his cheeky grin; a better look with his dentures in)

Still, while the years might rob this man of all the dignity that he once had

Happy childhood memories aren’t erased

(Even though I might feel he’s been replaced)

He might be old and frail and sad, but underneath it all, he’s still my Dad

Such a heartfelt and brutally honest description of what aging does to proud, strong men.

Talked to an old girlfriend the other day and she told me that her father at 106 recently went with her to a casino and won the jackpot on the slot machines. A very modest and humble man, I don't think he ever had the characteristic of being, "strong and proud." Perhaps the source of his longevity.

I can't say much about your Dad 'cause you're getting close to home.
But I can say with confidence that he has an angel for a daughter.

Your descriptions and content are moving. Certainly, as I've experienced (in other families), children who become heavy-handed and insensitive, when dealing with aging parents, only exacerbate resentment and hard feelings. I hope and pray I never have to experience that firsthand. Wisely, you are avoiding that here. Your kind of love respect and understanding seems in short supply these days. Thank you for sharing. r
