It has been said
That the important thing about your lot in life
Is whether you use it for building or parking.
The oldest of three planted in my Italian family
I then built a family of my own
With the man who chose me
And I in turn him.
A daughter then a son became us four.
We chose California, land of the sun
The new, the young, the liberal.
Suburbs were safe to raise a family
But in time sapped the energy of us two.
We built again, each separately
Children to college then families of their own
He to a new marriage and new set of four
Me to school, to achievement
To work, owning my own home
Choosing lovers, writing poems
Of where I’d been, who I was and who I am.
Building once again is my hope
What does my dream look like now?
Retired from a full time job
Perched on the peninsula, I often say
My energies are spent keeping healthy
Keeping optimistic, sharing the best of me and
Looking once again for that special someone
To build anew, something vibrant and nourishing
Before nature calls in a whisper
“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust”
And I’m finally parked for good.
