Baby Sister
By
Emma L. Willey
Papa came into the bedroom bursting with fatherly pride,
“You have a baby sister, Em,” he said as he gave me a ride
He took me out to the kitchen to meet the little dame.
Wrapped in a fuzzy pink blanket, May Christine is her name.
I could hardly stand the noise, my ears would almost hurt.
I didn’t think I liked her.
She cried.
As I crept a little closer, her odor was atrocious.
I liked her even less,
She smelled terrible!
Mama held her close to her breast.
She came to take my place as the baby;
Now I knew for sure I disliked her.
But as we grew together we became the best of friends
No sisters ever closer than May and I have been.
We finally both got married, then had our children five,
her two and my three kids.
Our families all got closer with every passing day.
We raised out kids together though we lived miles away;
We corresponded often by phone or with the pen
And our lives became a pattern of how we lived back then.
And then one day last summer, May left me here alone
She went to a much better place; her days on earth are done.
I miss her, my dear sister May who’s now in Heaven above
We lived so many miles apart
but we sustained our love.
The End
