I have sorta altered this poem and here is the finished product
I mention
cheap California burgundy
quite often in my poems
why drink the wine?
isn’t because it helps me write poetry
no . . .
it helps me
come down from writing poetry
well, partly
I quit drinking twenty some-odd years ago
until Dottie died
and I moved to where I live now
the freshness
of her death
and the new place
plus I had to put the Nipperdawg down
I had a hard time sleeping
decided I’d have a glass of vino
before I went to bed
couldn’t hurt
I tried it and it worked
put me in snooze-land with no problem
that has been five years ago
uh . . .
I’m still drinking the wine
only now
I’m drinking three to four glasses
at night
so I have to tell ya
between my nightly medication
and the cheap California burgundy
I sleep like the dead
for seven or eight hours
sometimes more
and nope
except for being a little fuzzy for about an hour
after getting out of bed
I have no hangover of any kind
my doctor thinks I drink too much
hah!
wasn’t her that couldn’t sleep
more’n three hours a night
she doesn’t even ask me about my wine intake
anymore
just felt like coming clean
about things
Love your confessionals. Heard somewhere that up to three glasses was okay… No, that was 5 cups of coffee… Egad!
I'm with you except for the sleep part. And I don't drink that rusty stuff colored by the skin of the grape. The very same Carlo provides me with crystal clear Rhine wine from the Riesling grape. Suits my Germanic heritage and certainly makes food taste much better, drinking it with my dinner. And, once in a while, to celebrate some occasions, another glass. But I don't need any drink to put me to sleep, just an exercise session and being in my wheelchair for 15 hours straight to wear me out.
