fresh fruit from the vines, berries from the bush
vegetables planted in fields over grown in a row
ripe lush apples, peachs and pear trees
picked all with loving care the breath of fall in the air
Women in aprons with scarfs to tie their hair back
soft dew on faces bent over steaming pots and vats
peeling and scrapping, removing seeds from cores and cobs,
boiling and filling jars, printed with labeled decorative lids
Preserving the summers wealth of mother natures harvest bin
boiled flesh of the fruit and of others just the skin
watermelon rhine's with spiced herbs like thyme
peaches and apples with cinnamon and nutmeg thrown in
Standing in the door way wishing for just a small taste
on hot biscuit or pone or even a ladle passed to lick
mama bending low to give me a kiss, I taste the sweets
on her loving lips, behind her back a tempting treat I miss
handing me the tidbit, "shoo now off with you little Miss"
sounds of laugher and song follow as I run, on the wind
aroma's mixed like perfume they permeate the air
bees of summer buzz me and my winters bountiful's bliss
