are relegated to parentheses.
The “women’s part” is brief
and then silenced while your booming voices
take command.
We are “subservient with
brains of balsa wood.”
Legalistic regulations barricade us
from distributing our intelligence to men.
Our ministry is limited
to other women and to the ears of children.
You sit on your thrones
in front of us and speak your truths.
I am subservient to no one but God.
I am not molded by a man.
I was formed before you took your positions, wrote
your practices
and held them over us.
I have broken out of the parentheses you created,
and I will not bend.

many of our troubles started with the
change-over!
Actually, to me, it is wrong to humanize
the loving, creative power that is available
to us all. And yes, through one another.
I also think the Jews are right to write
G_d. How can we speak easily of a power
that great?

Excellent Janet, and I wholeheartedly agree with you...for you see, the women in my life have indeed done as you say...My wife's mother is a preacher...and my preacher where we go to church is a woman also...I feel that God can use anyone in any capacity if they are only willing...great write.
Of course if you're not of a religious bend you don't need to deal with all that. But this is a wonderful poem depicting the archaic patriarchal mind set of much of the world. I burned my bra years ago...oops, I guess it must have been my jock strap, but nevertheless...
Excellent write... it's sad that in today's "modern" world, a lot of religions still look at women as ... as... "minor players".... I have left two Christian faiths because of this pratice... I never want my daughter to feel inferior - ever
