Finnish New Year

Finnish New Years have a tradition of melting lead in a vat and then dropping a small scoopful into a bucket of very cold water. The lead takes a shape and there is always an elder who knows how to read the shapes it makes. (passed down trade)

Poem Artwork

There are ways on holdays
Customs new customs of old
Special meanings some are said
Thinking of them in my bed
Like that molten piece of lead

Yes that molten piece of lead
Dropped into ice water cold
Of your new year it would hold
Shapes the woman very old
Only knew what they foretold

Melt the lead and drop it in
See shape right before your eyes
Old woman knows what it means
Tells of happenings and scenes
As if in a trance she seems

I'll leave that custom to the Finnish. Wouldn't want that "molten piece of lead" in my bed! Just little old me. John

WE'VE GOT TO RESPECT EVERY PERSON'S BELIEF. SO HERE'S MINE; GOOD OLD FASHIONED PRAYER, 'PLEASE LORD TAKE ME THROUGH, ONCE AGAIN, LIKE YOU DID LAST YEAR!' WORKS EVERY TIME, BY FAITH. THANKS FOR SHARING. HAVE A WONDERFUL MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Interesting tradition, and like Jerry said, there are many more around the world. In fact there are so many, the list would be hard to "Finnish!"

I'm sure there are varied ways people world-wide treat the upcoming New Year. Probably as many ways as there are countries. I like this tradition. You bet.
