Don't quit your day job just yet

So you are a poet...that and a quarter might, I say MIGHT, get you a cup of coffee...but I doubt it...

Don’t quit your day job just yet…

Think that writing poetry will get you a book,

Well baby maybe you should just stop and take a look,

At the many authors who have tried and got on the hook,

Most publishers I have found seem to be nothing but a crook…

Think that someday you and King or Grisham will have something in common,

Well then you better when you shop for food buy lots of noodles, yes Ramen,

Cause you won’t be eating for long high off the hog,

And your living arrangements might be a tent in a stinky old bog…

Sure books are written, most self-published I am told,

We have a better chance of freezing to death of the cold,

Than to have a book published FOR us, rather than by us,

And to actually have it on the market and sold,

We have a better chance of seeing god in hell,

Playing strip mahjong with the devil, every other word a cuss…

Truer words were never written. Now there's a cliche for you.

Self-publishing is a writers form of masturbation. It fills a need.

Cynical words Ed but unfortunately there is much truth in them. You have a razor sharp wit. It's so good to be reading your words again.

I was recently told by a publisher friend that there is no market for poetry and that publishers are reluctant to take a risk on them. The only way to publish is to self publish and market your own work. I haven't gone this route because I write for the sheer pleasure of it. If people enjoy my work that is great but if not, I've lost nothing. The pleasure in the production.

Take care precious friend

writing poetry is basically a personal thing ... who cares if it gets published ... the point is, as poets we have little choice but to continue writing and that's all that really matters ...

Oops...too late.

Playing strip mahjong with the devil? Yet another interesting, if frightening, morsel of information about you.

As negative as this sounds, Ed, I am inclined to agree with you. Being published is not a goal of mine. For the most part poetry is dead and the only ones who read it or appreciate it are poets themselves. There are pleanty out there who are willing to charge us to publish, but that is not how it should be. If we have talent, they will pay US to publish for them and not the other way around. I am not seeing that happening very often if at all.
Take care,
Sherry
