It cuts the Pine Barrens in two Straight away to end in Batsto Horse & buggy use in past centuries Pitch black, no light to speak of At night only the devil haunts… The western end Shamong Crazy to live too near the devils song Humans are encroaching in a throng On his on place of refuge left Fear you should where the devil does belong… Animals stay clear, sensing his presence They understand his omnipotent power Never go into the Barrens alone You may not come out in this world All will be heard from you is a dying moan… © ed 7/14/08
