Poem Artwork

It started such a beautiful day,

The ocean calm, on the surface not a wave,

A hint of a breeze out of the sou’east,

Bringing in warmer water, not a clue of the approaching beast…

To the canyon we were heading,

A day of fishing, drinking & song,

We had the wherewithal to stay out all night,

No storms in the forecast, seas minimal…

Two-hundred nautical we were nearing,

The radar showed a line, what the hell is that?

It came and went, at the screen we were all leering,

None of us knew or thought we should for our lives be fearing…

I thought it best to approach the radar target bow first,

Not even I, as the captain, had an idea what it was,

We still showed no wind, nor had any waves come upon us,

Just over the horizon was its zenith,

And as it cleared the horizon, we all gasped in awe…

It was ten stories tall, at least one hundred feet in height,

I immediately radioed the Coast Guard, my voice full of fright,

They were sending a helicopter, try to remain calm,

Easy for them to say, they were on land,

I want to smack that operator full palm,

Just before it hit, and I mean IT HIT!

We didn’t survive, our small boat smashed into miniscule pieces,

Thats right, we are now just so much flotsam on a calm sea,

The wave did as well dissipate, nothing on radar, nothing left,

Only our life raft left as a remnant of our passing,

Of us you will never again see…

Once, I was in a 120 tonnes wooden fishing boat after cod, we got not one but a heck of a gang of those juvenile delinquent waves that smashed every window of the wheelhouse and sent plenty of water down to the engine-room where yours truly was manning that put-puff of a diesel motor. We confronted the onslaught bow first (roller-coaster style) and reached port with the water lines as a below-water-line. The damn thing sank as we made to shore and I decided that it was the first and the last time I go fishing nowhere near the sea.

I can't imagine what that would feel like, Bro, but I don't think I want to experience it.

I don't think this would impress me. It would be one of those times when you put your head between your legs and kiss the world goodbye. Thank you for sharing Ed.

Great write and more than one spirit of the sea has left behind these sad tragic tales. I have been on ships riding ten to twenty foot waves and God becomes a good friend pretty fast.

In the End: Apocalyptic Poetry by Debra Kraft

In the end they'll all be dancin'--all them ones that didn't die.... Dance with me in the shadows amidst the lightning and the thunder, and all that nu-cu-lar debris. See the big bang from the other side, and then open that cellar door. Go down into
