The theory behind how arranged marriages happen and work cannot be debated in a general way.In societies where caste, creed, nationality and other norms are given much importance, this influences the approach in matters of choosing one's life partner. In India, arranged marriages are a way of life.It happens across all religious sections. The custom of selecting one's partner from a particular community prevails somehow. Hence such marriages are happening even in today's times. Finally what works is how two people manage it all. It is thirty five years today that we have been married. I would like to write about my arranged marriage

(J.K. Roseline  wedded  Sunny Kurian Sep 25th 1983)

25th September, three decades and a a half from now

 not quite   Sunny weather

Season of raindrops beating at  panes

Rain,it  glistened its wetness   later that day

  Like blessings shower

but Blowing breeze  took  to  overpower

Between  rain and   wind ,the tussle went on

But more than that my   mind and thoughts

Tried to fathom what’s going on

Like other girls my age brought up cloistered and closed

Earthly pairs  are   made   in heaven

It was a time when I drifted aimlessly

Waiting for life to take its  own twists and turn

From day to day  change that is on

Did bear my share of heartaches, love pangs

The elders  made the call of dictates

it happened  one fine day so merry

A  nerdish  guy  was made to stumble along

To see this girl and take the  call

Confused  in conflict was he

  But soon  decided to marry

Still not knowing the other   or what is in store

To take the call   who be there at the pew

  Out of the blue

My heart   resolved to share

To walk   the corridors   at a  consecrated church,

Soon wandered  we into the ceremony

The pulpit was new ,the priest too,   unknown lot at the alter  to stand

To tie the knot with a  person so new ,

Exchanged vows, rings, garlands and formal smiles

Simply in awe of each other be

From step one to  next step went we

‘The  marriage  rites, I Do

Solemnly to  man and wife the change

To set up  home, nest was made

Each day unfolds  little by little know ,

Lessons to learn of another kind

The experience of life and its lonesome ways

Quite removed from the carefree life I lived ,

It was an era  with no phones , TV or net

Like Jack and Jill  we  played but read well

Carefree and light at times like a bird

Graduating   college and much more to learn

Still no idea what turn to take or move

Restrictions  the norm, then in life to be

Trained how also not to use one’s mind

And so it happened, life’s changing moves

From Shakespeare  many   quotes had learnt   by heart

But nothing like now it made    sense

Thirty five years now down the lane

Perceptions, experiences , thoughts change with years

So much  in life to look back and see

Not a cakewalk all through for sure

Tolerating each other’s

Egos , mood swings, tempers  dealt with

Strange  happenings  get pass

Earthquakes,  fire accident each we got thru once

Nature’s fury are part of life

Time went past  like  lightning  and we looked on

It makes me  ancient, bygone and old

But the heart refuses to feel  the odd

A 9/11 there , a 26/11 here ,

Many incidents which touched  the core of our lives

Thrived on   through thick and thin this many seasons turn

Making   and moving   as we quietly began

The day is sunny   and so am I f

Together    enjoy the newness  each day

Thankful to be able to look back and smile

And dream of a future still full on

 With stars in the eye

This is how   we arranged to marry and be

To make good it is smile                                                                                                              which smoothens it all

when ever there is a flare up,

                                   the brigade is peace

What matters is how we  sing

“Let’s play the game of love”.

The chemistry was right. The passion was perfect. Two minds that were in synch. The physical attraction was powerful. There was wonder and excitement every day. The sex was off the charts. So what went wrong?
She was already married. And so was he. The end.

It is easy to blame ones society or community for all that goes wrong in a marriage arranged such as this I would still prefer to make my own mistakes and to be in charge of my own destiny Quite a history you have shared

Marriage is a sometimes sinkhole of wrong emotions and philosophies which the two involved do not not understand until they actually tie the knot. Whether arranged or not it is up to the two people involved to work out their differences and make it work.

Arranged marriages and their success has always fascinated me. I always let my heart lead in matters of marriage and my only one failed very quickly because we were so far apart in our thinking.

You repeat several times that you were not in control and that others decided for you. Still somehow you made a marriage work (and perhaps, children?). You teach a lesson here with your words about how to adapt regardless of the circumstances of your life.
