Rani Durgavati A warrior queen
“Better to die free than to live as a slave”
This is what she said when her councellors sighed!
While Emperor Ashoka with his Mughal forces fought
Wanted her to fight or live as wassal in his court
Those were the words of a widow queen bright
Who reigned the rugged territories of Central India tight
" Better to die free than to live as a slave"
On October 5th1524, as a princess she was born
To Chandel Emperor and his queen
Goddess Durga , she resembled
Princess Durgavati her name came to be!
She kept away invasions in the century wars
In a kingdom known for having just kings and great men
She was the lone female ruler born to lead from the front.
Many a battle ,she won and prospered as a queen
But when she met with the might of a great king
She knew there would be no win
Not in her nature to give in
So when asked to negotiate
In a matter of her life and death
Her lieutanants feared for life
Of their fearless queen
How they wished if only they could save her
Akbar the great Mughal Emperor
Was in such awe of this queen
“Be mine or be destroyed”, he ordered to lay siege
HER territory, the queen held dearly ,
His soldiers captured eventually
But the queen they found wouldn’t really budge
To the brutual state of affairs,
But it took,her to the edge!
She is remembered for her courage and her fearless vent
She ruled over a traditionally independent state
widowed she came with a son so young
She had the ravines and forests and hill forts for defence
The very region she tried to protect from invasion,
Her name her memory now so alive
A university dedicated, and her statue on horseback
Remind us of her fame
A stamp released in her name
In the region where she once was the queen
Five centuries later still feel her power.

Who was born to rule and martyred in war
The strength of the Mughal forces dared one and all
This brave Hindu queen how she took on the fight
An arrow of the enemy pierced her ear and another her neck
Unconscious for a while but she returned to her senses
Not hearing the desperate plea of the mammoth who rode her beast
She did what she felt was right at this stage
She removed her dagger and pierced herself
It was the 24th of June 1564,
She laid down her life fighting her foe
Her martyrdom now commemorated on this day
