Poem Artwork

She heard   him the  very first time

After a good thirty  five years or more

She  spoke to him  only twice before

He was the guy she once fell for

At sixteen she, silly, cute but naive

There was this wave, but never was sure

She a simpleton  from the country side

Where the two grew one at a time

He was  commissioned in the navy fast

But the spell was cast  like a stamped mark

When they fleetingly spoke before he embarked

But he was destined to cross  seven seas with time

Then as a captain felt like the Lord of the sea

Further away  he  moved and each went a different way

Never dreamt  to hear from him this far

Yet his memory remained like a scar

Until a call she got some time ago

“It’s me” he mentioned his name

Her heart remembered, how timid it was

Never  ever spoke as such

But now no more tender,in  its  wise old  skin,

 She soon confronted the voice

“O” said she, though sternly, I had a crush on you then

“Me too” he said firmly, without a blink of his eye in return

Never did anticipate, he would say this way

What surprised her more was the fluttering of her heart dum dum

Like the young girl she was when at school she blushed

 “Tread carefully whenever you can

‘ In matters of the heart” she thought

He wanted to know

What  she hid in her  mind?

Was  it a story that did not take off at all

Like a rocket messed up in its maiden flight

Was it a story like of a shooting star

That trails off just as it sparks  very bright

He agreed to the fact

Though it was so sweet and  short

The end came too soon at the start!

But then it left a lovely   memory

Throughout the life whatsoever

It will be  but forever so

With a life common   in their early years

Far removed from the present

This they will   savour ever

Touching and wistful story...it is amazing how those first feelings are resurrected so easily again after so many years...the heart never forgets....

...shooting star in your poem J.K. like
rapidly moving meteor of life's story verse
...burning up the memory...is entering the "here"
and "now" with so much hope...finally greatly
pinned to your readers minds...
Many Blessings!

Some naïve crushes don't get fulfilled. In my day, some of them turned into unwanted children as the fathers went off to war, either at sea or in the jungles of Vietnam. Your story, so beautifully written, is only tragic because the crush, while still felt 35 years later, was unfulfilled, like unrequited love.

Seems a bit autobiographical. Right?

Youthful love affairs are sometimes better left as memories. I met an old flame after 40 years, had lunch, and discovered we had nothing in common. She had put on 40 pounds, I had not; she was an ultra conservative, I was not; she had money, I did not; I had traveled extensively, she had not. When I took her home, her boy friend showed up and he was very angry. I left them fighting and never looked back. I hope you had better luck.

Our first love always occupy a special place in our hearts. No matter when we meet again we will still feel like we did when we first met. The feelings will always be there. Beautiful write, Roseline!!
