Being alone is never so lonely as the night, when darkness falls.

 'Lonely Nights'

How lonely is the night,
When the dogs howl
The street lights glimmer,
And the air shuffles in the wind

The alley cats prowl,
And claw the dark
The clatter of the dying cans,
Escaping the pressing bins

The mice and men that weave,
Their weary way to warrens
Where leaning walls embrace,
Their tracks so well remembered

Somewhere in the skittish shadows,
Another night turns over
Deep in the blanketed silence,
Where lonely bodies weep

I often think of you up there on that little island
taking care of others. I can imagine the dark and windy
nights with little to light up the world but your
beautiful smile. You are born to write! It warms my
heart.

Some memorable lines like cans clattering and the wind in this little masterpiece of lonely. Got me in the mood just by reading it.

Whoa!!! You grabbed the essence of your thoughts and allowed them to have their way with this poem, Mary . . . Good thing you did, they did fantastically!
