This poem was written with reference to Northern Ireland, and expresses the longing for a peaceful inclusive society in the future. It could however easily relate to the other great divisions in our world.
'Ireland' Flags that flutter in our minds Destinies or dreams Sacred memories or nightmares Stitched in perfect seams There's them and there's us Nothing in between Illusions ephemeral Walls dividing like streams To banks of indifference So far and so wide A beautiful land With a greatest divide Hostages to history Or free to find Chains and shackles To slowly unwind On the roads to freedom A new world to be Unity for all We hold the key © Mary Cecil

We certainly do hold the key. So many times in the past when an insurmountable barrier to progress seemed invincible, the foes stepped forward and joined hands, and in the long siege. Let us hope that happens for Northern Ireland.
