Something that calls to my heart as a lover of mythology and history.

Fallen Gods

Zeus was called the king of Gods
For deeds that lead to his rise
First he released his tormented siblings
From the belly of his father
Then chasing the treacherous Titans
With the strength of his lighting bolts
He sealed them from the heights of power

These bolts of lighting were forged
From the fires of Hesphaetous
A gentle god with miraculous gifts in the heat of fire
His skill was that of a blacksmith creating more then bolts
He created an indestructible metal that was often used as chains
On the enemies of the new Gods

Of those that followed the powers of Zeus
Hades, a brother of bloods, was sent below
He ruled the realm of souls both good and evil
Two rivers his path, Styx and Lethe
Guided by Charon, that skeletal ghoul
To the three mouths of Cerberus a faithful dog

Persephone, Hades fateful bride, half of the year
Is the daughter of the Harvest goddess, known as Demeter
Her daughter’s absence causes the season to change.

Others need named in this litany of gods
A god of war named Ares
A god of love named Aphrodite
A god of water named Poseidon
A god of knowledge named Athena
A god of hunt named Artemis
And a list of many such needed professions

But perhaps one yet missed should be mentioned
She is the Goddess Hera and wife of mighty Zeus
Her passion and occupation is for children and family
Her jealously blinds her to the innocence of family
When it is her husband that conceives with another woman

These Gods spurred the legends of Hercules
And Many great feats unmentioned here.
Still I pose a question all that entertain these words
If there were so many Gods in the ancient eyes of a people
Why is it that we now accredit all the greatness
And splendor of life to a single deity?
