Tiny insects dancing in the sunlight, inspiring me to smile...

Compelling passion

Just outside our eastern window,

Above the purple-flowering mint,

A swarm, no, now three swarms,

Of tiny beings, tiny, tiny insects,

Swirl and bank and swirl still more:

How infinite the fury within them,

How stormy this tornado, this vortex.

Is it a frenzy of love?  Of hate?  Both?

Whatever drives their dervish dance,

Whatever their compelling passion

In this morning’s summer sunlight,

It so delights and amazes me,

That I stop to watch, I must watch

This mystery with joyous envy,

This life in motion, this exuberance—

And when the radio plays a Bach fugue,

I smile without understanding why.

Another moving observation...Brings to mind a favourite piece of John Ruskin's writing, describing the Fireflies rising and falling in the starlight...
I love your writing...

Like Thoreau, it's wonderful to have the time to observe the little things that make life so interesting. My observation would be that it was an annual ritual of fornication required for the species to continue. Rituals like this provide food for many other animals and birds, making nature ever more complex and self-sustaining. We can learn a lot by observing little things like this.
