The Color Of Thoughts

A thought came to me-

Do thoughts have color?

Of themselves no.

 

It's our emotions

That can color our thoughts.

But only as an narrative.

 

We place a setting

In the readers mind,

Which is our canvas.

 

Their memory supplies

The brush for our thoughts

And the color that they see.

 

Thinking is another process

By which we discern color.

Names of colors are what we learned.

 

We materialize what we see

Into words that reflect color,

But in themselves are colorless.

When things "only" look black and white

Your poem suggests scientific inquiry. I know that our retinas are filled with rods and cones. The rods detect brightness, and the cones detect light as reflected in wavelengths as color. At night, our cones do not operate and we only see black and white (unless there is enough light to activate our cones).

As far as our thinking process in forming words and thoughts? Anything goes. Do women dream in Technicolor? I don't know. Like you wrote, we can color it any way we want.

Jean Sebelius, the famous Finnish writer, heard mucical notes when he saw certain colors. Fact.
