Looking outside my window

At the lush green grass.

Almost time for mowing,

But I won't lift my ass.

Gone are the days  for me

To get out my push mower.

Now I hire a grounds keeper

Since I've gotten much older.

Used to love cutting my lawn,

And viewing with pride

The work I had done.

Found it to be a lot of fun.

Even bought a riding mower.

Boy was that fun for me.

Neighbors used to laugh

As I sat on my riding mower.

Soon it became the trend

To hire a groundskeeper.

No one cut their lawn anymore,

I guess they call that prosperity.

I am afraid, though perfectly capable of mowing my own lawn, since my husband died, I have hired a gardener, and along with pruning the trees and weeding..he mows the lawn too...I still love to potter around the garden however and do my own pots and hanging baskets...but when he's finished mowing, and left..I go outside and breathe in deeply...there's nothing like it!!

A nice reflection on how we've changed through our prosperity. I would still be cutting my own grass with the only mower I ever bought if it weren't for having to quit over 25 years ago because I could no longer walk.

I don't think we are better for letting cheap labor cut our grass while we are off doing "more important things." The fallacy here is that, while cutting grass or tending our gardens, we are relaxing, meditating, and accomplishing something very visible directly with our hands. There is nothing more psychologically rewarding and I can't understand why so many pay others so that they can lose this benefit.

Yes, here in India we have even our car washers. By the time the car owner is ready to go to office, the watchman doubles up as the car cleaner, it is soaped, washed, dried clean and ready. I sometimes feel i must do the work just as an exercise, but how can I take away the watchman's work!Jk

Wonderful offering of evolution in the form of progressing physical abilities. I like to call it 'progressing,' instead of 'regressing,' because the writer of this recollection has all of those thousands of lawn mowings in different methods 'inside the mind and inside the box of experiences,' and all that is needed to trigger those splendid enjoyed physical doings.....is to step out upon the lawn mown by the 'groundskeeper,' who inherited the job ......and SMELL the wonder! Now, IF you, the author of this poem no longer has the sense of smell. . well, therein lies the true loss. In that case, there is always the wonderful 'sight' of it. I know what you mean, though, George....I look at young mothers with their tiny children and I get that 'I used to love to mow the lawn' feeling. ~~ Diana
