The night hung silent
Everyone on guard.
We were but a company
Facing a thousand foes.
No one broke the silence,
Rifles already cocked.
There woud be many dead,
Come the morrows dawn.
Fix bayonets, the sergeant yelled.
This would be a night of hell.
Minutes turned into hours,
And then the at ease, was called.
The enemy retreated,
No counter attack, thank God.
In the morning we got the news
That the war was over.
