Fables, upon close examination, tended to be quite gruesome and diabolical sometimes. But they came from stories passed down through the ages verbally and then were written down and captured for all time by the likes of the Brothers Grimm. Wonderful and scary at the same time. I never recall being scared by any of them. I only seem to fear real danger and I somehow knew the difference. There was no bogeyman in the closet or under my bed. As a boy, I slept well.
